Appeal for unwanted leisure boules

Midlothian Council would like to offer leisure boules for hire at the Penicuik Centre once our new piste is built. This is to allow members of the public to use the facility when we are not running our events. We think this is a grand idea and would be a way of marketing our club too.

If you have any unwanted leisure boules which you would be prepared to donate, please let us know.

Notice of boules purchase

It is very encouraging that our two newest recruits, Martyn and Craig, wish to buy their own set of competition boules. If any of our other readers want to purchase boules too, please let me know on info@penicuikpetanque.org.uk and we’ll try and put one order in to save on postage.

A starter set of boules from Complete Boules will cost £49.99 plus postage, or if you want to spend a bit more, soft carbon steel shooters boules are £59.99 and stainless steel soft boules are £89.99. The order will be going in some time in the new year so why not ask your better half to buy you some for Christmas?

That was 2012 – on to 2013

Well the 2012 season is drawing to a close, with only 2 Sundays left before the clocks go back. Highlights of the year include grants from Penicuik & District Community Council, Midlothian Council and the Big Lottery. We held our 2nd open pairs competition in August which was won by Ed & Alison from Perth. We had 3 players compete in national tournaments this year and all did very well.

Moving on to next year, we will have our new piste built in Penicuik Park in time for the new season in April. So, from next year, we will be running coaching sessions for members who want to improve their game. We’ll also be trying to unearth some new talent and hopefully find the Scotland players of the future right here in Penicuik.

Dates for your diary:
– Comedy night, 8pm 12th October Craigiebield Hotel, Penicuik. All proceeds to the club.
– Christmas Social – TBC
– 2013 AGM – January 2013 – date & venue TBC
– New Piste Opens & Coaching begins – TBC
– 2013 Season Starts 07/04/2013

Scotland at the Men’s World Championships

This week sees 4 players from Scotland – John Wilson (Fochabers), Robbie Stronach (Fochabers), Paul Bretenoux (Stirling) and Stephane Maurage (Edinburgh) – travel to Marseille for the Men’s World Championships. The shooting competition starts on Thursday with the Triples games on Friday. In the Triples, Scotland’s first match will be against the Ivory Coast.

All four players have supported Penicuik competitions (here they are at our Open Pairs in August). Very best of luck to the boys from Penicuik Petanque.

Inverleith Cash Pairs

The last open competition of the season, the Inverleith Cash Pairs was held on Sunday 30th September at Inverleith Petanque Club. 3 players from Penicuik, Bob & John paired up in their usual format (Deux Pois) and Colin played with Emma Montgomery (team name E-Coli).

8 teams in all turned out, including 3 members of the Scotland Men’s squad who fly out to Marseille this week to compete in the 2012 World Championships. The format was a 6 round snake (one round short of a round robin), with 3 games in the morning and 3 in the afternoon.

After 3 games it was the Penicuik contingent who were firing on all cylinders. Bob & John were leading at lunch with an impressive 3 wins +25pts – including their second game where they gave their first competitive fanny (13-0 win). Colin & Emma were in second with 3 wins +11pts – including a convincing win over Robbie & John (Men’s WC Squad) with some devastating pointing and shooting on display.

Bob & John came unstuck a little in the afternoon and ended the competition on 3 wins, giving them joint 4th place. Colin & Emma continued their strong form into the afternoon, with another strong display this time against Paul (Men’s WC squad) & Istvan (Grand Prix Series Champ, Scottish Doubles & Shooting Champ). Colin & Emma finished the day as the only unbeaten team and took the title and the top prize money.

A great showing from the Penicuik players again. It has been a great season and we are hopeful of unearthing more talent to challenge next year.

Our social games continue until the Sunday before the clock’s go back, weather permitting.

New Clubs

We are really pleased to hear of 3 potential new clubs near us; Portobello, Haddington and Seafield (W Lothian). The good word of Pétanque is clearly spreading which is good for us all. Well done to all these new clubs in getting this far. Keep at it!
